Event Highlights
Many thanks go out to our marvelous volunteers and attendees for making our Tenth Annual First in the Nation Suffrage Celebration such an inspiring event.
On Wednesday, August 27th at 1:00 pm, we gathered in Conference Room 316 on the Third Floor of our beautiful Minnesota State Capitol Building. A dessert reception greeted us featuring lemonade, cookies, fruit, bars and gluten-free treats.
Our program included a presentation about Minnesota's unique role in Women's Suffrage History and the origins of the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Memorial--dedicated on August 26th, 2000.
This year we were honored to bestow the 2025 Pass the Torch Award to the League of Women Voters of Minnesota for over a century of citizen education, voter service and nourishment of our democracy. Colleen Feige, State Vice-President accepted the award and shared remarks about the mission and activities of the League.
We continued our program outdoors at the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Memorial and Garden in the Lower Mall of the Capitol Grounds (corner of Martin Luther King Blvd and Cedar Street.) As we do each year, we honored the trailblazing women of South St. Paul who voted on August 27, 1920--making them the first females in our nation to vote under the full power of the 19th Amendment. The Minnesota Woman Suffrage Memorial was the first public monument to honor the 1920 South St. Paul women voters. As we re-dedicated the MN Woman Suffrage Memorial, we placed a yellow rose on the memorial's tablet honoring the South St. Paul voters. During the 25th Anniversary re-dedication ceremony, we also added a new element to the Memorial Suffrage Garden. We obtained permission from the State of Minnesota to plant a Blue Fortune Anise Hyssop to honor the life of Rep. Melissa Hortman (61st Speaker of the Minnesota House) , her husband Mark Hortman and their dog Gilbert. We greatly appreciate all of the assistance we received from the Capitol Grounds professional staff members. To the best of our knowledge, the beautiful native plant we added to the garden is the first permanent memorial to the Hortmans at the Minnesota Capitol. May it serve as a living tribute to the Hortmans' love of nature and their dedicated service to our state. For More Information, Please E-mail: Celebrate@Suffrage-19.com
