2020 First in the Nation Suffrage Celebration
Even During the Pandemic, We Celebrated the 100th Anniversary!
To keep everyone safe in the midst of the global Covid-19 pandemic, we relied on a generous portion of creativity during the Fifth Annual First in the Nation Suffrage Celebration.
In 2020 we employed two elements:
Bells and Flowers.
Bells & Flowers
The Bells . . .
Inspired by the title of our 2019 musical production, we rang bells in South St. Paul--one hundred years to the date our nation's first 19th Amendment voters cast their ballots in three precincts across the community on August 27th. Many thanks go to Luther Memorial Church and Clark-Grace UCC for ringing their bells for eight minutes beginning at 3:00 pm on Thursday, August 27th.

The Flowers . . .
Covid-19 kept us from assembling in in large numbers but that didn't prevent us from coming together to celebrate. We built a virtual community garden of flowers to honor our trail blazing South St. Paul women voters and all Suffrage Activists past and present. And our garden continues to grow. Find out how YOU can take a photo of a flower and "plant" it in our garden. You can even dedicate it to your favorite Suffrage Activist!
Hallie Q. Brown Wins 2020 Pass the Torch Award
Not only did Hallie Quinn Brown work as an educator, Suffrage Activist and Civil Rights leader, she documented the achievements of women on the printed page for the benefit of future generations. In this Centennial Year, there is no greater example of the spirit of the "Pass the Torch Award" than Hallie Q. Brown!
